Florin Caragiu: "Sentic" (poems translated from Romanian by Simona Ionescu) (I)

nearfar

you love to sneak into the room when I’m not aware,
like I’m not aware of my past anymore
when I pass through a paper wall
upon which a maestro has retouched a familiar hatred.

notebooks fill up the stove.
newspapers will no longer talk about laws suspension,
as the night when we spread flowers on the seawall
and test the sand
does not repeat itself. that says a lot about love’s arrhythmia
you can’t deny, even though you are the target
of a tidy invasion, whose meaning changes
by choice with every abandoned house.

and I want you nearfar,
I shake my weaknesses off of you and let myself show.
but that unique night does not leave the corridor
you run through in broad daylight, away from the crowd,
to a place where you can start to make them out.

3:30 am

it´s cold and almost dawn. I am not battling evil, I am too beat up already
by the sadness of the cut-down apricot-trees. the serenity with which
I follow the floating sticks
leaves in me the fear of your unexpected arrival. I am ready to fight
before falling asleep, yet no challenge reaches up to me. I fight for you,
for the smoke black skimpily spent.

I withdraw when victory baffles me. that´s when I see
how much I´ve lost with one breath and that things cause my thought to surface. water remembers the constant circling
and the void left behind on your sudden departure.
I drink it in with the same thirst
I bump into words, when the support withdraws
and I bury your image in the garden for later,
when abandonment no longer threatens it. I get dressed slowly,
preserving the warmth of your lips. you can´t hear me, but you behave
as though you obeyed a calling from nearby. and we are now
miles and miles away, still it´s good to have some space
when you love. the number calculates nothing but the impact against the bulwarks, when the body is already half-buried in the ground
and only the song that emerges keeps you alive.

round years

a feet game tears up the round years and the nettle bushes,
gathers us around inside the resonance box of an image.

pretty soon we´ll all be the same age.
suddenly our houses will turn small to fit into the non-empty intersection
of the interiors reshaped after a form of freedom
that grind up the words until they sparkle
with the raw love wandering among us.
nothing compares to the trust you have in a face
that washes your blood in several waters – an evening and a morning.

you watch your food come out of inertia and shine
inside your hungry mouth, while you throw yourself on the ground
to erase the fingerprints with your borrowed breast.

we only have time to glance at each other,
when the sun rolls upon the sound attached at the ends by uvulae,
fearless of the epidemic of unreachable happiness.
while your sleep keeps the dolphins hanging in the air, you can wear your soul
on the side kissed by pain; the need to breathe
teaches me not to lose you in the crowd.

your name is an eye hidden inside me, each time I find myself
thrown to the beasts by a gentle light.

sentic*

with your hand on your heart, with both hands on your heart
in the short recess from pain, you mumble
a song. you look around and quiver. you see nothing.
the things that used to support the utterance lose their fixity,
the words eager to explore the possible
are hindered by signs. not that they stopped radiating
a dim light, but a man who cleaned up the spot ruined by addictions
turns his attention towards something you can´t see,
though you know it is happening. I can tell you now
that I didn´t love you. no, I did love you! yet not to the point where
the angel cuts the red scarf with which I tied up my senses.
they weren't free, they couldn't drag out of my mouth
the knife with which you smear the colors on your canvas.
they didn´t know that sins are hit by a sublime hatred,
generated by the loving care of a Being you don´t know,
although your moves draw a breath from around it
to the spot touched by illness. you´ve got to protect me
from far away, ask those who can to raise one hand,
then lower it slowly towards the heart.

transfusions

however absurd it may seem,
many people expect from you
some sort of redemption.

your face reveals the way in which pain
keeps you glued to their bodies –
signaling you as a universal donor.

in vain you may try to demonstrate the opposite,
for your own hell itself
dreams of that
and takes the shape of the cross
which made room for you
to disrobe yourself of your mother.

more and more people
wish to test your soul
and thrust your words into their veins
like transfusion needles.

closeandfaraway (poem by Florin Caragiu, English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

photo: Corina Gina Papouis

you like entering the room without me sensing you,
the way I can not sense the past anymore
when I pass through a paper wall
depicted well by a genius with a familiar hatred

notebooks are filling up the wood stove
the suspension of laws won’t be read in the papers
because the night we scatter the flowers over the seashore
trying out the endurance of sand
shall not repeat itself. this says something about the arrhythmia of love
the love you can not deny, although you are the target
of a well co-ordinated invasion, with unpredictable meanings
predicted only by each deserted home.

but I want you closeandfaraway,
I am setting you free from my habits and allow you to see me.
but that unique night will not leave the corridor
through which you’re running, in full day-light, away from the crowds
towards a place where you may tell them apart.

(poem published in the volume "Sentic", Vinea Publishing House, Bucharest, 2009, p. 8. English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

and you (poem by Florin Caragiu, English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

we don’t find each other by rules, horses dried up by sun
allow us to float over the city

and you, grass, and you, mountain, stricken too soon
by a gaze poisoned at the tip
you are rinsing our words: childhood grabs you by the hair
to see birds withier beaks stuck in the sky
and wings crushed by darkness.

a heart levitating to power stretches your arteries
and unleashes in alveoli the echo
of the first vanished friend

you’re covering me with the skin I’ve been born with.
you know how to do this
because you’ve seen the angel and have not betrayed him.

the dog chasing us has yelped
and stopped. the rocks hollowed by wind
are stringing us through them
like a chain through the cross.

(poem published in the volume "Sentic", Vinea Publishing House, Bucharest, 2009, p. 14. English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

Price of a minute or so (poem by Florin Caragiu, English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

you laid the dishes and asked to be healed,
but the set sun is grinding the inside
where you hide your science. your cry is not a riot.
your bones are counted before the poem swallows them.

you can see the bodies protruding the soul like out of the sewage
and can not tell the distance between the car and
the half of a puddle splattered over the new suit
the street is broken into battle scenes
when the strikes have reached you and price of a minute or so
have wiped off the dirt on the jacket.

beyond the pile of wood you leave the grievances
of those pointing.

God is turning his face
so you can dislodge the part of me
gathering around a night vision

you pull me towards a stain of light,
but death is hanging outside the body
and with a silent noise it rattles
the bags of those returning from the market

Sentic (poem by Florin Caragiu, English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

With hand on the heart, with both hands on the heart,
within the short respite swallowing the pain, you blubber
a song. you look around and shiver. can’t see a thing.
things once supporting the open word have lost their steadiness,
words willing to explore the possible
are clogged up by signs. is not as if it would disperse
farther than a weak light, but a man
who tided up the place ravished by passions
is shifting his focus towards something unrevealed to you,
although you understand what’s going on. now I can tell you
that I did not love you. No, I loved you! but not enough for
the angel to cut the red scarf, the one I tied up my senses with.
they were not free, they could not release from the mouth
the knife used to spread colours on canvas
they didn’t know that sins are stricken by a sublime hate rage,
commenced by the caring of a Being unknown to you,
although your moves are pulling a breath out of its surroundings
towards the spot touched by illness. you must protect me
from afar, you must beg the ones that could still lift a hand
to lower it gently towards the heart.

A good match (poem by Florin Caragiu, English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

I look at you and I say: we are so different
so that we convince each other we are not alone.

things admit to this

they survive the tired tools
only to show off the liveliness
of mustard.

they are so different from us
so that we know we are not alone,
under the rain of strikes,
as long as our body
withholds us crucified on a love
mesmerizing deserters.

is enough to come to a halt in front of each other
and worlds overlap.

human beings are counted twice
and accept the game of matching themselves,
as they are breathable earth
and ask for a crumble of glory

(poem published in the volume "Sentic", Vinea Publishing House, Bucharest, 2009, p. 16. English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

Crisis (poem by Florin Caragiu, English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

childhood unfolds out of its hinges
using shape reproducing exercises
which make you understand what you hurriedly refuse:
the unhealing illness bringing you close to love,
crisis sliding light on foes,
when all around becomes unclear.

the only handy Braille alphabet
are those bodies undusted
and the awkward movements
from the moment of a friend’s vanishing.
people are cruel
because they dream themselves as heroes,
but no fairy-tale overlaps with life
because when you are truly unwell,
it re-writes itself with a thundering speed
out of chunks from the future

the old lady from the nursing home talks to me about leaving:
her story pounds like a revived heart.
the body staying whole after partings,
though unable to be located

as much of a metamorphosis, so much of a being

(poem published in the volume "Sentic", Vinea Publishing House, Bucharest, 2009, p. 18. English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

Through your eyes, through your mouth (poem by Florin Caragiu, English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

God looks at me through your eyes, through your mouth he tells me
to start the day with a darting game:
within our past there are concentric circles.
the nights and the days spread in layers, are rubbing our irritated skin
of surrenders against the roller of colours.
under water is silence and the oxygen ties us to life,
the way love holds us while we’re climbing loneliness
and we break capillaries with a doubting heart in the rally
towards the beach where shoals of fish fall asleep.
you want to open car doors, to create a tornado
to check out the sit belt choosing the first thing
able to expel your blood towards a cloth primed with heated oil

we need a crumb of faith to divide the circle into four,
without the shivering fear of never knowing the core,
where we believe it pulsates according to weather predictions.
people give you up so easily,
to the point of admiring them for the courage of getting ahead of you,
because you know you cannot move forwards from here
not crawling, nor dragged by the light over well defended borders.

it is, with all being said, a sure place,
because the caressing is wiping the wronged letters on the body
and the wood for the fire heals through severing.

(poem published in the volume "Sentic", Vinea Publishing House, Bucharest, 2009, p. 17. English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

Mountain bike (poem by Florin Caragiu, English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

the speed of snails is growing
on the streets lingered by sun
and the tunnel of time is stretching
with the final sprint.
you break in half
one part goes to the flowers.
dogs are listening to you
and forget to demand their rite –
is a way of travelling without signs
through half of a man.
you give way
and do not demand the cold anymore.
beyond freedom
there are no dots cluttered with fear
but a triple leap
with a heart rotten by happiness

(poem published in the volume "Sentic", Vinea Publishing House, Bucharest, 2009, p. 15. English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

Transfusions (poem by Florin Caragiu, English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

no matter how absurd it would seem,
many are waiting from you
some sort of forgiveness.

the face betrays the way pain
keeps you glued to their body –
a sign that you are the universal donor.

you may try and prove the opposite,
so what,
your own personal hell
is dreaming about it
and takes the shape of the cross
which created enough room for you to
undress from your mother

more and more people are
trying on your soul
and are sticking your words in their veins
like transfusion needles.

Round years (poem by Florin Caragiu, English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

a little trot tears apart the round years and the nettle bushes,
it gathers us within the resonance box of an image.

very soon we shall all have the same age.
hurriedly our houses shall become small, as small as to fit in the valid intersection
of interiors rearranged within the shape of freedom
rubbing words between them, to ignite
the raw love lost within ourselves.
nothing compares to the trust offered by a face
that’s been washing your blood in many waters – an evening and a morning

you watch food coming out of inertia shining
in your hungry mouth, while you throw yourself to the ground
wiping the prints with your borrowed breast.

we have as much time on our hands as to forget each other,
when sun is rolling on the burning sound caught at the end of Adam’s apples
without the fear of an unattainable happiness epidemic.
as long as your sleep holds those dolphins up in the air, you may dress your soul
with the kissed-by-suffering side, the need to breath
teaches me not to loose you in the crowd.

your name is a hidden eye inside of me, whenever
I find myself thrown away to the beasts by a gentle light

(poem published in the volume "Sentic", Vinea Publishing House, Bucharest, 2009, p. 10. English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

Three and half (poem by Florin Caragiu, English translation: Corina Gina Papouis)

it is cold and the morning is approaching. I’m not fighting evil, I’m too tenderised
by the sadness of cut down apricot trees. the silence used to watch floating sticks
leaves me with the fear of your unexpected arrival. I am ready to fight
before turning to sleep, although no challenge is reaching me. I fight
for you, for the darkness of smoke tightly spent.

I withdraw when victory bewilders me. only then I see
how much I have lost through one single breath and I understand that things are digging out my thought. the water remembers the ongoing swirl
and the abyss of your leaving. I drink it with the same thirst
I get hit by words, when the props withdraw
and I burry your image in the garden, for later,
when no disavowing can threaten it. I dress up slowly,
keeping unharmed the warmth of the lips. You cannot hear me, but you behave
as if you’re listening to some spur of the nearby. and now we are
hundreds of miles apart, but is good to have space
when you love. the number only takes into account the force of striking
into walls, when the body is already half buried
and only its emerging song is keeping it alive.
